Chemical Peel

Chemical peels smooth the texture of the facial skin providing help for wrinkles, blemishes, acne scars, pre-cancerous skin growths and uneven skin pigmentation. There are three types of chemical peels – phenol, trichloroacetic acid (TCA) and alphahydroxy acids (AHAs). During your consultation, Dr. Lincenberg will discuss with you which is the right chemical peel process for your skin.

Alphahydroxy acids (AHAs) such as glycolic, lactic or fruit acids are the mildest of the peel formulas and produce light peels. AHA peels are typically used for fine wrinkling, areas of dryness, uneven pigmentation and acne. AHAs have less recovery time than phenol or TCA peels.

TCA peels are most commonly used for medium-depth peeling for treatment of fine surface wrinkles, superficial blemishes and pigment problems. TCA peels have a shorter recovery time than phenol peels.

The strongest peel – phenol – produces a deep peel and is used to treat coarse facial wrinkles, areas of blotchy or damaged skin caused by sun exposure, or pre-cancerous growths.

Georgia Plastic Surgery offers all three types of peels. A particularly popular peel is a component of the Obagi skin rejuvenation program -- the Blue Peel – which is a TCA peel to resurface and rejuvenate aged and damaged skin.

The Blue Peel is unique in the world of skin peeling procedures in that the surgeon precisely controls the depth of the peel. This kind of precision has not been possible with any of the other peeling techniques. Layers of dead skin cells exfoliate and are replaced by healthier ones allowing the skin’s own clarity and tightness to resurface. It is especially effective for blemish-prone skin, pigmentation problems, sun damage, or general poor skin quality.

The procedure, administered by Dr. Lincenberg and our aesthetician, takes from 30 minutes to an hour. The number of applications may vary according to the patient’s skin condition.

While chemical peels provide good results, they are not a substitute for the more permanent results of facial surgery such as facelift.

The Obagi Skin Care System is available only through medical offices. Please refer to our Skin Care Center section for information about Obagi NuDerm products.
