Hair Transplants
Baldness has been a major concern to most men since the time of Julius
Caesar (100-40 B.C.). Caesar, much to his chagrin, was bald. To hide
this imperfection he would, each day, carefully comb the hairs on the
back of his head forward to cover his bald scalp. It is not surprising
that of all of the honors bestowed upon Caesar, he took the most pleasure
in adorning his forehead with the laurel. The laurel, of course, would
help camouflage his bald scalp.
The patricians of ancient Rome were, like so many men today, very
concerned about hair loss and would no doubt have marveled at the miracle
of hair transplantation that is now available. Today, hair transplantation
is a highly sophisticated, yet simple, surgical procedure which can
provide a natural and permanent solution to baldness.
Balding is a gradual, time-dependent process which typically begins
in the temples and back of the head and later progresses to the center
of the scalp. Balding patterns differ. In some, hair loss begins as
a diffuse thinning over the entire scalp while in others it may be
limited to the back of the head. In still others, it may begin in the
front and progress uniformly straight back. No matter what your particular
pattern of hair loss or how extensive it is, hair restoration can be
of benefit to you. Remember that for balding to be noticeable in any
given area, at least one-half of the hair follicles must have already
fallen out. If you notice thinning at a young age, it is generally
wise to start transplantation early before your hair loss becomes so
advanced that camouflage is difficult.
With today's advanced hair transplant techniques, hair restoration
can now be performed safely, effectively and most importantly, naturally.
No one but you has to know that this procedure was performed and as
you begin to regain your hair and look more youthful, you will feel
better about yourself.
Hair from the sides and back of the scalp is moved to bald areas to
allow permanent lifelong growth. Hair can be moved by way of grafts,
plugs, or tissue expansion. The best procedure for you is determined
by a variety of factors including your own desires and aesthetic goals
as well as the degree of your hair loss. Dr. Lincenberg will discuss
options appropriate for you during your consultation.
The number of hairs needed to cover a bald area depends on the extent
of hair loss in that particular area, the density of hair in your donor
area and the aesthetic goals you wish to achieve. Dr. Lincenberg will
estimate the number of sessions needed for maximum coverage during
your consultation. Graft transplant techniques are generally performed
on patients who desire a more modest change in hair fullness. Flaps,
tissue-expansion and scalp reduction are procedures that are usually
more appropriate for patients who desire a more dramatic change.
Hair transplantation is performed in the surgical suite at Georgia
Plastic Surgery. It takes about 3-4 hours. Expect to return to work
in 3-5 days.
