Pink Ribbons
In 1995, Sheldon M. Lincenberg, MD, FACS, founded an event to promote breast cancer awareness and to raise money for local breast cancer organizations. Dr. Lincenberg created this event for all women who are fighting breast cancer and for those who may encounter it in the future, either themselves or through loved ones. This event is called Pink Ribbons.
Pink Ribbons is a luncheon and fashion show presented by Georgia Plastic Surgery and Parisian at the Ritz-Carlton Buckhead, benefiting the Georgia Breast Cancer Coalition Fund and Bosom Buddies of Georgia, an affiliate of the Georgia Cancer Foundation. A special moment of the event each year is the portion of the fashion show featuring breast cancer survivors as models.
Last year, Pink Ribbons raised raised $75,000 for our beneficiaries.
"This year, 4,000 new cases of invasive breast cancer will be diagnosed among women in Georgia. Breast cancer is the most common cancer among women, excluding skin cancers. It is the leading cause of cancer death among women aged 40 to 55, and it is the second leading cause of cancer death for women of all ages, exceeded only by lung cancer," Dr. Lincenberg said. "Pink Ribbons is one way to help make a difference in the fight against breast cancer," he added.
The Georgia Breast Cancer Coalition Fund (GBCCF), is a non-profit, tax deductible organization established to promote public education about breast cancer. The GBCCF works hand-in hand with the Georgia Breast Cancer Coalition, which is dedicated to:
- Increasing research into the cause, optimal treatments and cure for breast cancer
- Improving access for all women to high quality screening, diagnosis and treatment
- Increasing the influence of breast cancer survivors and others concerned about breast cancer over research, clinical trials and national policy.
Among the services of Bosom Buddies of Georgia, an affiliate of the Georgia Cancer Foundation, are:
- Low-cost mammography program, helping qualified applicants obtain mammograms at discounted rates;
- Breast cancer support groups, a network of 40 groups throughout Georgia including groups for Young Survivors and for Spanish speaking women;
- ChemoChic, a program offering women techniques to enhance their inner and outer beauty during chemotherapy; and
- Angel Closet, supplying wigs, turbans, hats, prostheses and bras to women diagnosed with breast cancer.
