How Do I Choose A Qualified Plastic Surgeon?

Today, many types of doctors perform plastic surgery procedures and may even refer to themselves as plastic surgeons. Unfortunately, not all of them share the same degree of training and experience in the specialty. It is important to be careful in choosing your surgeon.

Board Certification in plastic surgery is the only accepted form of accreditation the medical profession offers to evaluate the competence and quality of a plastic surgeon. The American Board of Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery and the Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons of Canada are the only boards recognized by the American Board of Medical Specialties to certify plastic surgeons.

By understanding all the tissues of the body - how they grow, age and respond to injury and healing - plastic surgeons are able to repair, reshape, redefine and rejuvenate. After years of formal education, specialized training and surgical residencies, surgeons take extremely rigorous written and oral examinations. In plastic surgery, this process includes an outside review of the quality of the surgeons results. If successful, and only when successful in fulfilling these criteria, does the individual have the right to refer to themselves as a "Board-Certified" plastic surgeon.

In addition, personal chemistry is very important. Choose a surgeon with whom you are comfortable and who listens closely to what you want.
