Buttocks Augmentation
Adding roundness or fullness to the appearance of the buttocks has gained in popularity.
Women desire a full firm buttock shape with a high gluteal prominence or bulge. This shape suggests the enhancement of the pelvic tilt. The ideal shape is also more feminine if there is more width to the hips than to the thighs.
Three techniques are used to enhance the shape of the buttocks and each technique has its advantages and disadvantages.
Silicone implants
The best known of these procedures is the placement of a silicone implant into each buttock. An incision is made up and down between the buttocks. A pocket is made inside of the gluteus muscle and the implant is inserted.
These silicone implants are different from the silicone implants that are used for breast augmentation. These implants are firm rubber, like a doorstop or a rubber ball. They should be positioned high in the muscle so that you do not feel them when sitting normally. One of the common complaints of this procedure is the unnatural feeling of a large lump, which hurts to lie on.
This procedure is the best for several situations. Thin women who have little fat to transfer have no other choice. A precise volume enhancement is achieved because the implants do not change size. The procedure is completely reversible by removing the implants.
Micro-fat transfers
The next most common procedure, and the procedure that is putting butt enlargement on the map, is the micro-fat transfer.
In this procedure, fat is removed from other areas of the body and reinserted into the fat and muscle layers of the buttock. The fat is processed in several steps to increase the likelihood that it will remain alive after it is transferred. The cells are nourished and kept alive by the blood vessels that connect to them within days. Prior to this process, only about a third of the fat would survive, but currently we experience survival rates of 50-60 percent. Therefore, during the healing phase, some of the fullness will disappear.
Of course, this procedure requires adequate areas of fat to harvest and has the added benefit of reducing the fat of the donor areas and improving the shape of those areas. The new fat cells are alive and permanent. The fat cells will increase in size if weight is gained and reduce in size if weight is lost.
There are no scars with this procedure. This procedure can be repeated to add even more fullness to the buttocks. In fact, I tell every patient to consider the possibility that they will need more than one procedure to satisfy their desires. The procedure is reversible by performing liposuction.
Dermo-fat flap
The third procedure is relatively new, and it is only performed in conjunction with a lower body lift, usually on formerly obese patients who have experienced massive weight loss.
This procedure uses the tissue layers above the buttocks. The lower body lift cuts away these loose tissues, however, they can be preserved as a pair of flaps. The flaps are folded into the buttocks, just as you would use a small pillow behind a larger pillow to increase its projection. The flaps are limited to the size of the excess tissue. The tissue remains alive and its size does not shrink during healing. These flaps will also vary in size with weight changes.
In Summary
There are a few other points to consider about the options for a buttocks augmentation. The implant procedure can be combined with the micro-fat transfer procedure to achieve the most dramatic results.
