Common Procedures for Teenagers

Children with prominent ears may be ridiculed by their peers. Using local anesthetic and just a few stitches, the plastic surgeon can readily correct the problem of prominent ears. This procedure can fix protruding ears back closer to the head, reduce the size of large ears, correct ear lobe size or solve other ear problems.

Some young adults, whose nose seems to grow faster than the rest of their faces, may wish to alter the size and shape of their nose to avoid real or imagined ridicule. Others, especially young girls, want to change the shape of the nose to give a better balance to their face. Rhinoplasty can improve the appearance of the nose and its proportion in relation to other facial features.

In addition to correcting an injury or birth defect, rhinoplasty can reduce or increase the size of the nose, change the shape of the tip or the bridge, narrow the span of the nostrils, or change the angle between the nose and the upper lip. Usually, rhinoplasty is performed on teenagers once they have completed their growth spurt - around 14 or 15 for girls, a bit later for boys.

Young adults also frequently benefit from other surgical modifications of the face, such as a jaw or chin that recedes or is too prominent. In addition, laser surgery and other techniques can be used to remove unsightly birthmarks including port wine stains.

Teenagers with severe acne often are self-conscious about the resulting scars. Dermabrasion is a procedure that helps smooth facial contours marred by the acne scars.

Unusually large breasts can make a teenage girl feel extremely self-conscious in addition to causing a variety of medical problems as she grow older - such as back and neck pain and skin irritation. Reduction mammoplasty (breast reduction) will remove fat, glandular tissue and skin from the breasts creating a better proportion with the rest of the body.
